NatureAlpha

Turning Disparate Data Into Commercial Opportunity for NatureAlpha

Overview

Environmental impact data is difficult to deal with - disparate, fragmented, non-standardised and messy - but it’s also vital if investors and businesses are to make effective and timely decisions on how best to ensure that their actions minimise negative environmental impact.

NatureAlpha is a business operating at the cutting edge of ESG reporting and management, which believes environmental data can be harnessed and managed. Its vision is to offer investors the information they need to reduce their exposure to biodiversity-related risk, and to enable them to ensure that their investments have a net-positive impact on nature.

To make this a reality, NatureAlpha needed the help of a best-in-class tech delivery partner who could support their vision whilst acting as a semi-autonomous extended delivery team.

We worked closely with the NatureAlpha Founder & CEO Dr Vian Sharif to helpher build NatureAlpha, filling the gap in ESG metrics for transparent, science-led asset-level insights on biodiversity and nature at scale.

Enter Daedalus.

What Daedalus did

We worked with NatureAlpha to aggregate and normalise a number of different data sources (non-standard and standard), which are then analysed and interpreted within the context of a specific business or operational sector to provide a detailed, quantified assessment as to the natural world impact of a business or portfolio of investments.

The NatureAlpha product examines a universe of companies and for each of them builds up a set of metrics, quantifying their impact on biodiversity, their upstream dependencies and their natural impact/damage, alongside industrial data, to determine natural world impact.

Until now, this information didn’t exist as a unified dataset, and as such it wasn’t possible to link it to specific companies and their assets - NatureAlpha is not only extracting value from this data, but creating an entirely new market for it.

How we did it

01

Developed the strategic and tactical roadmap for the creation of NatureAlpha, from the initial scientific proof-of-concept to the desired endpoint of NatureAlpha as a standalone, revenue-generating business. We defined and built the strategic and tactical steps to get from A to Z, from tech to operations to commercials

02

Supported Dr Sharif through the process of fundraising for NatureAlpha, advising initially on the overall need for external investment and subsequently assisting with the management of the overall fundraising round and the assessment of eventual offers and their likely impact/benefits. In addition, we assisted in the closing of the fundraising round and eventual due diligence with eventual partners

03

Assessment and selection of data sources to determine best access/quality/price ratio, including due diligence and negotiation as well as initial relationship management with data suppliers

04

Built out a minimum viable product from the initial scientific model into a production-ready MVP for testing and customer discovery, incorporating a rigorous process of iterative development and A/B testing throughout the process

05

Creation of initial sales pipeline management, sales docs and training for eventual onboarding of sales teams

06

IP solidification - through rigorous in-market testing of the MVP, Daedalus integrated feedback into the scientific IP to ensure it was optimised for real-world customer demands

from concept to clients in under a year

What this achieved

01

Took the client from scientific proof-of-concept to saleable product in 10 months

02

Enabled creation of cost-effective, fully-offshore client delivery team through rigorous planning and documentation process, along with comprehensive handover

03

Ensured client retained value in the business

04

Delivered tech for lower ongoing cost than projected by initial model

05

Acquired one revenue-generating client and 10 in the pipeline (active trial) clients within 3 months of the v1 product being announced as ‘coming soon’
